Enslaved

This old hymn struck me this morning.

Oh! To grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be.
Let that Grace now like a fetter
Bind my wondering heart to Thee!
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it.
Prone to leave the God I love.
Take my heart now. Take and seal it.
Seal it for Thy courts above.

That's good. What hymn is it?

Pretty close, Meanie.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing.

Here is the song in its entirety. I really like the last two verses. I would like the others if I was not so afraid to raise my Ebenezer. :)

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Robert Robinson, 1735-90

Come, Thou fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
While the hope of endless glory
Fills my heart with joy and love,
Teach me ever to adore Thee;
May I still Thy goodness prove.

Here I raise my Ebenezer,
Hither by Thy help I’ve come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.

Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be;
Let that grace now like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee:
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it;
Prone to leave the God I love.
Here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.

Oh, that day when freed from sinning,
I shall see Thy lovely face;
Clothed then in the blood washed linen
How I’ll sing Thy wondrous grace!
Come, my Lord, no longer tarry,
Take my ransomed soul away;
Send Thine angels soon to carry
Me to realms of endless day.

Thanks for reminding me again that salvation in its entirety is "of grace." I can sing that song without my heart swelling with thanksgiving for all that my God has done, is doing and will do to complete his work of salvation.

Now that I'm pushing 40, I find that I appreciate the hymns more. I still mostly stick with the praise stuff for worship, but the hymns (by-and-large) speak more to your heart through their clear presentation of gospel truths.

I agree! I went through a phase of hating hymns (too much of a reminder of the old "churchy" days :)
But now, the kids and I get out our old songbook and sing them. I never saw in them then what I do now. This one is one of my faves.

Yep, definitely diggin' the blog thing. Next best thing to having you guys in our living room. Except it takes us a week to have a conversation that would normally take 15 minutes! Oh well, there are less fruitful hobbies I suppose.
